All people like to know about their future.  It is very admirable to plan for our tomorrows but most people find it difficult to have a good grasp about what is going to happen tomorrow.  God’s Word is the best planning guide that is available.  That is the only authoritative source with which we can trust our life.  Bible is crystal clear about what to expect and how to prepare for your future.

Jesus Christ has taught us clearly about what will happen after death:

Nobody else could be as authentic about that subject as Jesus could.  He is the only one who ever lived on earth who has absolute knowledge of the past, present and the future.  Jesus Christ is the only one who has tasted life, death and resurrection.  He became the firstfruit of resurrection (1 Co. 15:23).  The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the pledge that all those who trust in Him will be resurrected at His return.

Before the resurrection of Jesus Christ, when people died, the righteous and the wicked went to a place called Sheol which had two compartments separated by an impassable gulf or chasm. In Lk. 16:22-31, Jesus told the story of a poor godly man named Lazarus and an unnamed rich man, in which He tells us where people go when they die.

Abraham’s Bosom:

The first compartment in Sheol is called Abraham’s Bosom, a place of comfort.  Lazarus, the beggar in the story, died; angels carried him to Abraham’s bosom, the resting place of those who put their trust in God before Calvary (v. 22).

Hades:

The second compartment is what the Bible calls Hell or Hades.  The rich man died and was buried, his spirit went in to a place called Hades, a place of torment (v. 22,23).

A great gulf:

A great gulf or chasm is fixed between Abraham’s Bosom and Hades; no one can go from one place to the other.  But they could see, what is on the other side.

An Intermediate State

Bible reveals that there is an intermediate state where the soul of every human being will spend between their physical death and the Resurrection.  For a believer who received salvation and eternal life through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Resurrection will occur at the coming of the Lord in the clouds or as it is known as the Rapture.  For the person who never accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, their resurrection will occur after the millennium at the final Judgment know as the Great White Throne Judgment.

Since the Cross of Jesus Christ, all believers or the righteous who die, their soul will go to Paradise.  Jesus said to the dying thief on the cross, “Today, you shall be with me in paradise.” (Lk. 23:43).  After the resurrection of Jesus, the abode of the soul of all righteous people who died before His resurrection were transferred from Abraham’s Bosom in Sheol to Paradise in heaven.

The Final State

The best thing to do in preparation for our future is to accept eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.  That will guarantee that “we will be with the Lord forever” in heaven (1Thes. 4:17).  Those who die without that eternal life, after the Great White Throne Judgment, they will be thrown into the lake of fire forever (Rev. 20:15).

The best estate planning you can do is to plan for the eternal state with the Lord Jesus Christ.    Otherwise, you will be the biggest looser, forever.  In His presence, there is great joy.  Inherit that and be best winner.  Amen.

At the end of the intermediate state we talked about in the previous article WHERE WILL YOU SPENT YOUR FUTURE?, there will be the resurrection of the dead (Acts 17:32, 23:6; 1 Cor. 15:12,13).  In fact, Jesus said that there will be the resurrection of life, and the resurrection of condemnation.  John 5:28-29 says “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. “

Apostle Paul also affirmed this truth in Acts 24:15 “I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.”

Jesus called that the resurrection of life, and the resurrection of condemnation.

Resurrection of life

All who have their hope secured in Christ by faith in Him will be risen from the dead, from the grave, with a new glorious resurrection body.  They will be with the Lord for ever.  That is more than going to heaven.  That is gaining Christ (Phil. 3:8-11).  The place called heaven is not the most glorious reward; the Presence of the person of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ will surpass any of our expectations about heaven.  That is when we are going to experience true love.

1 Cor. 13:12 “ For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

We now love Him in faith;  then we will love Him in Person.  We will behold the one who died for us on the cross, who forgave all our sins and who loved us with an everlasting love.  In His presence, we will forget all else, and we will love Him and be with Him always.

Resurrection of condemnation

This will take place at the Great White Throne Judgment.

Rev. 20:11-15

All who were in the hades, the place of torment in Lk. 16, will be cast into the lake of fire along with all the wicked including, Satan, Antichrist and the False Prophet of end time. See also Rev.19: 20; 20:10.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING

Now the most important thing for us is to be prepared for the resurrection of life.

Hebrews 9:27-28

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

Preparation for eternity is now.  No one can buy a good place in heaven.  Securing a good grave in a better cemetery may be possible on earth if you have fame or finance.  But to be with the Lord after this life, you have to be with the Lord in this life.  It only takes one moment.  Now is the time.  Invite Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of your life by repenting of all the sin in life, because we are all sinners; no, not one is righteous.  All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive you and give you eternal life.

The moment we sincerely repent and trust in the finished work of the Cross of Jesus, God will accept us as His holy children.  All sins will be forgiven.  It will never be counted against us anymore.  And we are on our way to an eternity with Jesus.

Jesus is the only way to heaven.  There is no other way, neither is there any other savior.  Now is the day of salvation.  The Savior is waiting for you NOW!
